Installed the provided software, hooked the unit up to my laptop, and within seconds had the data downloaded and saved in a nice text report, both codes and freeze frame data. This product allows you to capture data from the ODBC II port on most newer vehicles. I found it easy to use and I'm the kind of person who will log data from all my cars and keep it for future reference. When the car isn't running right, I'll use the old data for diagnosis. My only complaint is that the CarChip only logs 4 signals in addition to vehicle speed and only a small set of the available signals. I'd rather it log more signals at once. For that, I'd be happy to trade off how long it can log data for more signals. For example, with a Chevy V8 engine, you cannot log the fuel trim for both cylinder banks and all 4 O2 sensor signals at the same time.

I bought this item about a year ago and have used it numerous times with no issues whatsoever. Yes, I agree with the other review that better software could come with it, but I'd also like to point out that there are about 20 different freeware projects that are compatible with this hardware. So, just go searching, download a few, and see what works best for what you're trying to do. I ended up buying a serial-to-USB adapter (just a cheapie at that) later on to use this device with my new laptop and it still works great. If you have a laptop or even a desktop handy for the garage, don't bother with the scantools that cost you $1,000's, this one will do almost all the same tricks for way less money.

The hardware or vehicle connector is excellent, haven't found an OBD2 vehicle it won't work on. The software on the other hand desperatly needs attention. The software that comes with the tool is all freeware and every single application is VERY limited. Even if they had to add 20 or maybe even 30 dollars to the price, still would be well worth the money, they should include some quality diagnostic software. There are several available.

The interface is pretty good and the drawback comes from the fact that you have to try different software applications until you find one that works on USB. I loaded the drivers and software and the car was talking to my computer within a few minutes. The tool "found" the problem and I was able to fix the problem. I would have given a five star rating but there was no software docs. If you like to DIY, you need this tool

This code reader performs well. I like the case and all the items supplied. What is lacking is information. Yes it reads and displays codes, but codes without explanation are of little value. I inquired by e-mail to the manufacturer about cost of code descriptions but the reply was lacking in explaining how to obtain same. The reply did note that the particular code I asked about was related to emission controls but that is too broad an explanation to isolate a problem. You can buy upgrades for the code reader but description of what you get is also vague, therefore anyone buying an upgrade would not know what they were getting.

On the plus side I was able to find code descriptions on the internet but it was not easy. Once I had the code I bought and replaced the defective part and the problem was solved. Calling a dealer and inquiring about the cost of replacing the same part revealed I saved over 50% of their price, and I included the cost of the reader. Therefore it was a true bargain, but without the code description would have been of little value.

You can get a code reader cheaper than this one. A lot of the functions on the unit like 'MON' and 'DATA' buttons require an upgrade for $99. The unit did not come with cable to link it to a computer to do the upgrade, you also have to purchase that.

Shipping of the ez read 2000 was very quick and the Ez read 2000 works as advertized. Used it to clear my check engine light from problem I corrected a year ago with the egr, and have used it several times on friends and family vehicles to pinpoint problems. The unit works very well and is user friendly. A fee will be charged for the upgrades to a scanner etc., but the upgradeable feature is the reason I purchased it.

I hooked it up and the unit sent a signal back to the dash with a series of flashes using the check engine light indicator. Looked up the problem codes and replaced the part (over $200.00 US) that was the the probable cause and the problem resurfaced. The unit is not equipped with accurate data read outs to give you enough data. Using the unit on my 1987 Supra was a waste of time and money.

The package only contains a manual that tells you how to recover the codes on cars it applies to, what the codes mean and a few tools (jumpers,etc) necessary if they are called for. If you open up the Actron CP9025 you will see the only thing it does is short two contacts so the trouble light on the dash will flash the stored codes. If you have the codes for your vehicle then you do not need the book that comes with the Actron CP9025. If you do not have the codes, then the book may be worth paying for the "scanner". You can do as much with a paperclip as you can with this misnamed product.

Eversince my car's "check engine" light went on because my gas tank cap was not shut tight enough, I have been looking for a product which will tell me why the light is on. This product not only tells you why the light is on, but it asigns priority and urgency to the code. So if the light comes on when you are driving "in the middle of nowhere" you will know what the problem is, as well as if you have days to attend to it, or only one or two days, or in the case of red prority light, if you should pull over off the road when it is safe to do so and summon help. This reader will give me peace of mind when I am on the road.

My new Code Scout arrived today & I spent an hour trying to get it to work. It easily connects just fine but cannot read at all. Tech support went though the process with me as I tried several more times & finally said to send it back for replacement (At MY expense!) Well, it is not my 2000 auto since it was read just fine for emission testing last month and had a check engine light code read & reset just fine by a mechanic 2 weeks ago. Tech support agrees that it sounds like it is a problem with the code reader. I'll probably purchase a different brand locally since I don't trust this brand & I'd need to pay Shipping again if I need to return the replacement unit.

I bought this tool because it says it works on all cars 1996 and newer. It does not allow me to select Mercedes from it's list. My two cars each showed a code on the scanner with no explanation of their meaning. The AutoXray web site code lookup did not have a listing for either code. The computer tech help form failed to go through after several attempts. I was on the phone line for quite a while without talking to a person, so I gave up. I do not know if buying the computer update would help, or if I would just be waisting more money.

A good tool with basic error code readout for OBD1 equipped vehicles. I haven't used it on OBDII vehicle yet. Interface is a little funky having to re-enter vehicle name each time you scan it. You have to buy a serial or USB cable to hook to your computer (added expense and should have been included in the kit). Software that came with the kit is primative and doesn't include any code database for OBD1 vehicles. Even though I got it at substantially less than retail it's still over priced. IMHO

I'm a bonehead mechanic. When an engine warning light goes on, I hate having to take my car to a shop & then being trapped with their diagnosis and fix. So after checking Consumer Reports, I bought their highly-rated AutoXray CodeScout 2500. The warning light on my 2005 Dodge Caravan came on at 52,000 miles. I already had myself convinced that it was an oxygen sensor, because they are usually the first to fail. But SURPRISE, the Code Reader showed a code & diagnosis of a clogged or leaky EGR valve. I didn't even know what that was, but after checking online, I learned what the EGR valve looks like and where it's located on the engine. I bought a new one from the dealer, and installed it. Because I'm a bonehead, it took me several hours to do the job. But I figure my scanner is already paid for just in the savings on one job! The only difficulty I experienced with this product was getting the rubber cover off to insert the batteries. Otherwise it's pretty darn slick!

The AutoXray CodeScout 2500 was exactly what I needed to repair my daughter's '98 BMW M3. Based on the code readout which told me "coolant temperature insufficient to . . . " I was able to pinpoint the problem with a bit of logic and a test drive to confirm that the thermostat was probably stuck open. I replaced the thermostat and cleared the fault. The CodeScout paid for itself in one use and I've got two other cars it will work with. Excellent quality and very reasonable price.

Of the code readers out there for home use, this is far and away the most capable and easy to use; with the USB-cable version of the AutoXray EZ-PC 500 Software which you can get through Amazon for around $50 (and be sure to get that version, not the 400) Before buying the software, however, be sure to get the USB version and not the older version with a serial cable; you have to ask before buying because vendors will sell you the EZ-PC 500 with the serial cable if they have only the old one, and there is no version number from AutoXray to tell the two apart. I gave only 4 stars because it took me a lot of e-mails and phone calls with the company to find that out--not because of any problems with the reader. With the 2500 and the software you are all set to get updates to keep your reader current; you can get codes from virtually every vehicle that has code plugs; and then you can transfer the codes to your computer to chart them and keep track of them for your maintenance records. You also can reset the check engine light. If you are a professional, a scanner (at least twice as expensive) is probably more appropriate, but the 2500 with the software does everything most of us individual owners could want. Great buy via Amazon at 2/3 of current MSRP (find MSRP at the autoxray web site).

"Awesome tool for a great price." 2009-10-20

I read through some of the reviews on this product and one in particular mentioned you could get the same information for six bucks.

That's true, for 6 dollars you can jumper two connections on an ODB I car (95 or older). The early ODB system could tell you what code was being thrown but very little else. Can you jumper two connections and get the same information with an ODB II car? No. You cannot do meter sweeps on a ODB II car, to read the trouble code, you need a scan tool.

This tool can read trouble codes and do a lot more. I purchased this tool because I've been having on and off misfire problems on a 1997 Camaro. I didn't know which cylinder was misfiring and honestly, if the check engine light wasn't on, I wouldn't have even noticed a problem. I hooked the scan tool up to the car, and the trouble code was P0300 - Random misfire.

To the average person, a random misfire means just that, every cylinder is intermittently misfiring. Yes, if this were an ODB I car, a jumper would have told me that much information. Smart troubleshooting would have you test the ignition coils or the fuel system. If the misfire is not contained on a specific cylinder, then it may indicate a system wide issue.

This is where the scan tool paid for itself. Instead of throwing parts at the car I was able to look at the vehicle data, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of data I had access to. I could see the misfire counts for each cylinder. Every cylinder had less than 10, except cylinder 5 which had over 5000 misfires. I traced the problem back to a bad spark pug wire on #5 that had be rubbing against the headers I had just installed.

The trouble code was misleading, and instead of spending my time under and over the car looking at the fuel system and ignition system, I spent 5 minutes diagnosing the problem.

I have a background in automotive diagnosis and have a degree in Automotive Service Technology. The scan tools we used in school cost over $1000 and were manufacturer specific. This tool doesn't give you as much information as those did, but for the average DIY mechanic, this tool is perfect. If you're looking for a tool to just scan a code, and nothing else... buy something cheaper.

If you're looking for a scan tool that can assist you in diagnosing and fixing emission related problems, this is the scan tool for you. You may not use it every day of your life, but when you do need it, it will get the job done.

MOST vehicles can be tested KOEO (key on, engine off - memory codes) with an analog voltmeter and counting needle sweeps, or looking at the CHECK ENGINE light and counting flashes.

Just because a code reader gives you a "32" doesn't mean you have a bad part relating to that number. An EGR valve stuck open from carbon on an older EEC-IV Ford will give an EVP sensor out of range (its not fully extended). A kinked MAP sensor hose will give odd problems and false readings. A generic TFI (ignition module) will have your car running like crap with no end to repair bills in sight (until you get a Motorcraft TFI again!).

This item is by no means a "magic wand". I had a chance to use one at a friends house...his hesitation problem was nothing but old spark plugs (platinum plugs are junk: get copper core; AC Delco or Motorcraft). This reader (AS ANY READER) will ONLY get codes STORED in your ECU, or "hard faults" in a KOEO test. Manufacturers used to make the processors "dumb" so they wouldn't store a code if the error only happened a few times - I feel they are doing it again.

If this is the "Lincoln" of all testers, it should come with a BETTER way to hook it to a PC - like an USB port.

I do like that it comes in a case...a small sheath would just hold the broken parts inside when it would be dropped.

I rate it 2 stars only because the retail price is ridiculous. The product itself is a 3.5 or so.

I've been using this scanner for 6 day now and have performed 4 scans on various vehicles.

All the scans worked well. Not all the scans gave all the information I was expecting to see: It is VERY vehicle dependent. Some give a lot of information, and some give very little. All require a (REAL) vehicle shop manual. Although the codes are given in english description, the values given mean nothing if one doesn't know what the correct value is supposed to be! The same goes for reading various "Live data" in the Monitor mode. It's ALL meaningless unless you already KNOW what the readings should be!

The "PC" program installed without problems. You should be aware that the scanner connects to your PC via the old "Comm" ports, You know, Com 1,2,3,4... If you have no "com" ports available, your outa luck!(as in my case).

Customer Service/Technical Support: I tried to call and ask for support concerning the Com port issue and found NONE!! Support IS NON EXISTENT! They claim they have it, but I havn't been able to find it yet, 6 days and counting. The phones loop around, and none of the listed phone numbers work. Not ANY.

The Web support page returns a "server error" and has done so for the last 6 days.

As far as my Com port issue; I purchased a "Belkin" Serial to USB adapter and installed it. It provided a "Virtual Serial Port" via USB. This solution works fine. The update section of Autoxray' site worked. I downloaded the current tool and PC Software and downloaded it to the scanner. NOTE: The serial to USB adapter doesn't work with all software!! It's hit and miss... I was lucky.

The PC program provides a "Report" type screen with the data lined up as a summary report. Nothing fancy. No frills, no graphics. Just a way to store the data that was scanned.

My bottom line: Don't expect this tool to fix your car. You need real technical information about your car AND a healthy background in technical abilities.

I would not pay the suggested retail of $799.00! NO WAY!

I paid $450.00. I have the manuals and the background. it works for me. As for all those sensors... Is it the sensor or the wiring to the sensor, or the computer??? AutoXray does NOT play in that ballpark!

This cable should come with the kit. I don't know why it doesn't. While hooking up the scanner with the supplied cable can be done, often times it is rather awkward to read due to the final position the user has to assume to read the screen. This extender cable enables the user to be in a much more comfortable position inside or outside the vehicle while using the scanner. If you use the scanner often I would highly recommend using this cable extender.
